The striking gold and rust-coloured streaks and spots are named after the blood (toto) and bush hen (weka) and are caused by concentrated iron oxide inclusions. When polished, the stone possesses an almost liquid, glass-like surface. When sliced and backlit the dark green depths filter light beautifully, mimicking deep, moving water. This is a large and significant stone. It has the physical presence of a major treasure (taonga) or an exhibition grade foundation rock.
