Traditional

Cultural carving is anchored in Māori heritage, oral histories, and spirituality. These pieces are considered taonga (treasures) and are heavily dictated by protocol, ancestral and heritage design and, specific symbolic meanings. The primary elements of design and form focus on precise, mathematically balanced, symmetrical or intentionally asymmetrical traditional motifs. Common forms include but are not limited to the Tiki (good luck, inner knowledge, loyalty) Toki (power and strength), Koru (new life, harmony, peace), Hei Matau (prosperity, good luck, safe travel over water).

Contemporary

Contemporary jade carving acts as a bridge between historical heritage and the modern artistic movement. Artists working in this style respect traditional foundations but intentionally push boundaries by experimenting with modern aesthetics, foreign art concepts, and multi-media combinations. Blah blah Design and form concepts feature sleek, geometric shapes, abstract curves, or minimalist lines. These concepts frequently sterling silver settings or embedding precious stones or metals directly into the art piece.

Freeform

Freeform Jade Art Carving Freeform carving is a style entirely dictated by the natural state of the raw boulder or stone. Rather than converting the stone and imposing a predetermined cultural symbol or geometric structure onto the stone, the artist surrenders the final design to what is already hidden inside the rock. This is most often achieved by ensuring the stone retains the very shape it was mined with.

New arrivals

Raw jade aka pounamu or greenstone is becoming increasing rare as pre- 1997 stockpiles are exhausted in the need to supply an ever increasing market. Today there are many carvers and artists carving brilliant pieces across the range of traditional, contemporary and freeform art sculpturing. The Jade Collections range of raw stone is ethically sourced and provinance confirmed. It is illegal to sell black market jade.
