This impressive Kawakawa pounamu carving slab showcases the intense, deep green tones characteristic of the traditional New Zealand jade variety named after the native pepper (kawakawa) tree. A rich dark green hue dominates the entire surface. Very tiny dark flecks resemble the characteristic spotting on kawakawa leaves. Opaque and dark, when thinly sliced to 8mm the edges glow brilliantly under direct light. Minimal internal fractures permit delicate, high-detail freeform carving work. However, this is a stunning piece of kawakawa and in its present form is ideal for a tabletop setting either sitting or upright.
