Rare Mutton Fat Carvers Jade

Mutton Fat jade, also known as White or Yellow Jade, is rarely found in New Zealand. This stone runs through deep cream to yellow and bronze colours. The polished stone is waxy and warm to the touch. Mutton Fat jade is highly prized not only for its intense wax, lubricant-like texture but when polished it has no distinct grain, making it exceptionally smooth to the touch and easy for carvers to work with. Sourced in the 1980s at Wainihinihi Creek, West Coast, New Zealand.
